Maria’s Advice – Vegan Dining at Chain Hotel Restaurants

Hello My Vegan Traveler Friends!
Today’s topic is “vegan dining options at world, chain hotel restaurants”.

Travelers do not always have the time to go to a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner when their next tour may be coming up shortly. You never really know how long it will take to be served in a restaurant or how long it will take the meal to be prepared. It is indeed quicker to eat in your hotel’s restaurant to save commute time. That said, most hotels do not offer vegan options. For breakfast, it is usually not a huge problem as fruit salad, toast with jam or a bagel(ask if egg coating on it) are common breakfast fare at any hotel. However, for lunch and dinner, vegan travelers do not have an easy time at the typical hotel chain restaurant. It is fairly common for hotel restaurants to offer pasta dishes or veggie burgers to vegan diners. However, vegans will need to verify with the waiter or chef that these meals do not contain eggs or egg yolks.

Hilton Hotels
The Hilton Hotel chain seems to be one of the best for vegan diners! Their worldwide locations have different restaurants on site within their hotels. Some of their locations have vegetarian meals which can be requested as vegan. Many of these restaurants do offer vegan options on their menu. For example, their hotel at Heathrow Airport in London offers vegan options at each of their on site restaurants. Hilton’s Kerala, India location offers good vegan dining also.

Ritz Carlton Hotel
The Ritz is an elegant, luxury hotel. Their various locations have several, different restaurants on site. Most of them serve veggie-friendly meals. Vegans will find quite a few selections ranging anywhere from Asian fare to tofu dishes.

Marriott Hotel
The Marriott Hotel chains have several restaurants on site. Some of them are buffet style cafes with pre-made food items at their buffet stations. Vegans may ask the waiters as to which items are made without dairy or eggs. Their sit down restaurants have a few vegetarians items which may be prepared vegan upon speaking with the chef. They are accommodating to vegan requests.

Crowne Plaza
Some of the Crowne Plaza restaurants serve limited vegetarian options. A few of the vegetable side dishes or stir fry may be requested as vegan without the butter.

Radisson
This chain does not offer much vegan food or even many vegetarian entrees. However, some of their USA locations offer veggie burgers or pasta made without eggs. Vegans should request these. Some of their international locations offer more interesting vegan fare. For example, their Aruba location has a couple of restaurants offering a vegan option. One is called Gilligans and offers Mediterranean Vegetable Wrap which is vegan. The other restaurant on site is called Sunset Grille and offers a grilled portobello sandwich. Another example is their Sydney, Australia location has several vegetables side dishes on the menu. Vegans may ask the chef to prepare them without butter or cheese.

Doubletree
This hotel does not offer many vegetable selections. Some locations offer veggie burgers. Vegans should inquire if they contain eggs.

Holiday Inn
Not many vegetarian or vegan dishes at most locations. However, pasta dishes may be vegan. The waiters can tell you if the dishes contain eggs. International locations, such as in Asian countries have more vegan offerings. The Holiday Inn in Beijing, China actually has a vegan restaurant “Pure Lotus” in their location.

Sheraton
Not many vegetarian or vegan dishes at most locations.
Sangkee Noodle House restaurant is located in the lobby of the Philadelphia Sheraton. Vegans may find suitable meals there. Some of their international locations, such as Hawaii or Thailand offer a greater selection of vegan fare such as noodle or mixed vegetable dishes.

Wyndham
Not many vegetarian or vegan dishes at most locations. Some international locations, such as Mexico have several ethnic restaurants on site. These may be suitable for vegans.

In summary, large hotel chains still need to include a greater number of vegan options at their restaurants and worldwide locations. While several large chain hotel restaurants do offer vegan options, there are an even greater number of them which only offer vegan options in a few of their international locations. The chain hotel industry does appear to be becoming more vegan friendly as time goes by.

Several years ago, PETA wrote a “Vegetarian Report Card Hotels”. It made mention of the various hotel chains and how accommodating their restaurants were to vegetarians and vegans. http://www.goveg.com/f-hotels06.asp.
