Maria’s Advice – Researching Vegan Bakeries, Ice Creameries, Shops Before Your Trip

Hello Vegan Travelers!
I would to share some information regarding a very yummy topic! Lets discuss what kinds of vegan food products you should research online prior to your international journeys.

Whenever I travel, I first go online to the happycow.net website (and others) to locate vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants in my destination city. I enter the name of the country or city to return a list of vegan/vegan-friendly restaurants. As you check each of the returned websites, you should also notice which ones serve a vegan brunch.

Happycow(like other vegan restaurant lookup sites) also returns a list of health food stores that carry vegan foods or vegan products. Whenever you would like a vegan meal or snack for your hotel room, lengthy bus tours, or souvenirs to take home with you, a visit to one of these international health food stores is a nice convenience. However, that does not complete my online research for my trip.

I also do an online search for vegan ice cream, gelato, donuts, cupcakes, snacks, candy, and chocolate. Basically, I bring up google, then enter the keywords “vegan” +”ice cream” +”Montreal” (for example). Google then returns links to any shops in Montreal that may serve vegan ice cream. I do similar searches for vegan cupcakes and so forth.

You would be surprised at just how many vegan food shops you may find globally!!
For example, it is not a difficult talk to find vegan ice cream all over North America, Europe, and Australia. However, it is difficult to find in South America. Vegan gelato is also sold across the USA and Europe. Though you may not always find an ice cream shop that is completely vegan, you may find an ice creamerie that offers five or six vegan varieties. Such is the case at Meu Meu in Montreal, Canada.

Vegan donut shops are sprouting up at various locations also. Vegan donut shops are not typically as popular as vegan ice creameries. However, it is well worth the online research if you find such a tasty treat during your travels!!

I also search online for vegan bakeries at my destination country and city. Again, the search may find bakeries which sell some vegan goods, not necessarily a completely vegan bakery. My next step is to specifically do a search for vegan cupcakes in that city.

The final thing I research prior to my trip are vegan shops. There are retail outlets internationally that sell vegan clothing, beddings, shoes, logo items, and so forth. Examples are the “Vega Life” shop in Amsterdam (www.vega-life.nl) and the “Vegan Pride” shop in Sao Paulo, Brazil (www.veganpride.com).

After completing this online research, I feel well-prepared to explore the vegan scene in any international city that I visit!!
