Maria’s Advice – Eating Vegan During Camping Trips!

The weather is warming up here on the east coast and across the country. People are starting to think about summer and vacation time. This may include a camping trip! Whether you camp in the USA or abroad, you may have concerns about the kinds of foods you should bring with you as a vegan. Across the globe there are health food stores carrying vegan food items. Websites such as HappyCow.net list those stores for each destination country or city. When you need certain groceries, run out of some items, or need particular foods to be as fresh as possible, these health food stores should be a mandatory stop during your travels. There are certain staple foods that vegans should pack in their cooler for their camping trip.

Some of the following ideas will provide you with a nutritious and delicious food experience during your stay at the campsite.

Vegan Breakfast Foods:
Packaged oatmeal. Just add hot water.
Muesli. Add soymilk.
Scrambled tofu with veggies (green peppers, onions, broccoli, tomatoes, and herbs).
Vegan faux sausage.
Vegan muffins.
Fruit salads.
Packaged vegan pancake mixes.
Granola. Add soymilk.
Toast and jam.

Vegan Lunch Foods:
Packaged soup cups. Some brands include Nile Spice and Spice Hunter.
Tofurky sandwich with vegan cheese.
Avocado sandwich in pita bread.
Hummus, tabbouleh, or baba ganoush in pita bread.
Peanut butter sandwich.
Veggie dogs. Grill them on BBQ.

Vegan Dinner Foods:
Packaged Indian meals (curries, eggplant, potatoes, lentils, spinach, etc). A popular brand is Tasty Bite.
Packaged Thai or Asian meals such as rice or noodles. A popular brand is Annie Chun.
Veggie burgers with whole grains.
Couscous, quinoa, bulgur.
Pasta.
Freeze-dried packaged camp food from sporting goods stores such as EMS. This may include rice, beans, and vegetable stews.
Faux meats such as vegan chicken or vegan beef.
Tofu cubes or TVP to grill.
Packaged falafel mix. One popular brand is Fantastic Foods.
Corn on the cob to BBQ.
Potatoes to BBQ.
Vegetables that can be put on a skewer to BBQ. Some good choices are zucchini, carrots, squash, peppers, and onions.

Snacks:
Fruit.
Trail mix.
Vegan cookies.
Vegan Smores made with dark chocolate, vegan marshmallows or soy whipped cream, and vegan graham crackers.

FYI. There is a vegan camp held every year at a different location in The UK. It is a social event with lots of great vegan food.
