Vegan Travel In Singapore

I really enjoyed my visit to Singapore! It was part of an Asian continent, multi-country trip. It is a very veggie-friendly place, one of the cleanest places on earth, and filled with beautiful tourist attractions.

My tour group made our first stop at the Botanical Gardens. As we paced along the paths, one by one, we were privileged to gaze upon a huge variety of plants, trees, and flowers. Simply exquisite! The variety of vibrant colors and unique shapes were a sight to behold.

We next participated in the obligatory “City Tour”. I got a good sense of the city as we drove by the government centers, shopping districts, museums, landmarks, parks, and various neighborhoods. There were several ethnic neighborhoods to gaze upon such as Little India with its ornate Hindu temples and Chinatown with row upon row filled with shops.

Then there is Merlion Park. The Merlion is a lion’s head on a fish body which became the symbol of Singapore. It represents Singapore’s history as a fishing village.

We briefly stopped over at Raffle’s Hotel. Sir. Raffle is the founder of Singapore. The Singapore Sling beverage originated here in the bar. No “Sling” for me, as I never consume alcohol(clean living including veganism!). I did drink a fruit juice there, just to say that I was in the famous Raffle’s bar. This luxurious hotel houses a theater, a garden courtyard, shops, and a museum.

Singapore possesses amazing waterfront dining and shopping options at the Boat Quay area. This is situated upstream from the Singapore River. They are considered to be the best waterfront restaurants in Asia. It is easy to find vegan fare, as the regional cuisine is represented by three cultures: Indian, Chinese, and Malaysian -all vegan-friendly. I chose to go to one of the huge “hawker stalls” to eat. These are large, mall-like structures whose only purpose in to serve food. You can find dozens of restaurants and cafes in these hawker-stall buildings. One example is HarborWalk. I ate primarily in hawker stalls/food courts. My meal of choice was an Indian curry dish. Good and spicy! There is actually a vegetarian/vegan hawker stall called Toa Payoh at HUB 2nd Level “Korfu Food Court”.

You can also find some vegan restaurants in Singapore including: Whole Earth Vegetarian(only Peranakan-Thai vegetarian restaurant), Enso Kitchen(macrobiotic), Genesis, Fo You Yuan, LovingHut(chain), Naive, Rice House, Greenland Vegetarian Restaurant, and Guan Yin Zai – Kebun Bahru, among many, many others.

After dinner, my tour group was given the rest of the evening to ourselves to either rest or do an activity of our choosing. I decided to hop into a taxi to visit The Night Safari on the outskirts of town, approximately a half hour’s jaunt by taxi. The city is super-clean and safe so a petite, single female should feel quite comfortable going out alone in the evening.

Upon arrival in the park, visitors get on board a lengthy, awning-covered, windowless tram. The vehicle then slowly proceeds into the woods where habitats representing eight regions of the globe can be found.

Nocturnal animals such as tigers, bats, rhinos, jackals, hyenas, and giraffes are frolicking about in their environments. Everyone is free to get off the tram and walk around at certain points in most of the habitats. I remember bats flying right by me and hanging upside down in the tree to my left! This was a charming attraction which was well worth the trip!

The next morning, my tour group traveled to Sentosa Island. You get to this resort paradise by air cable car from Singapore. When we arrived, I saw colorful peacocks slowly strutting around the pathways. There are musical and theatre attractions here, along with dining. One of the most popular attractions is a giant Merlion structure which tourists enjoy climbing to top for a view overlooking the island.
My journey was now complete.

In summary, Singapore is a fantastic place for vegans because of the multitude of Chinese/Indian/Malaysian restaurant hawker stalls. This clean city has lots of wonderous sites to explore!
