Pilgrims and Vegan Eats in Historic Plymouth, MA

Any time of year is great to pay a visit to historic Plymouth, Massachusetts! Tourists from around the world make a journey to this little town to see where America got started! I made a couple of day trips here recently to partake in some local holiday traditions and to experience the sightseeing and vegan dining scene!

Since Plymouth is not home to any vegan bakeries, I decided to make a stop at a vegan-friendly bakery in a town about 25 minutes to the north, on my drive down to Plymouth. “Sadie Mae’s Cupcakes”(Sadie Mae’s Cupcakes) in Hingham, MA will bake vegan cupcakes upon request. The requests need to be made by phone a couple days prior to pickup. I enjoyed the moist chocolate cupcake with its smooth and rich vanilla frosting!

Cupcake Charlies(Cupcake Charlies), located by the Plymouth waterfront offers vegan cupcakes, when requested by phone at least two weeks in advance. It is required to order a dozen cupcakes. Their offerings include chocolate and vanilla cupcakes. For those taking an extended vacation, this is a good option.

A half hour later, I had arrived at the Plymouth waterfront! My first order of business was a visit to the Mayflower ship, upon which the Pilgrims landed in America back in the year 1620. The original ship’s location is unknown, but is suspected to have been turned into scraps back in Europe upon its return. The ship in Plymouth Harbor is a 1950′s replica. Visitors may tour its interior.

Plymouth Rock, also located in Plymouth Harbor, is said to be the first spot on which the Pilgrims landed. Later history has concluded that it may not necessarily be the case. However, it is still an important part of America’s history.

Every November, Plymouth showcases the “America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Parade”. Guests can watch costumed Pilgrims and militia, as well as musicians and others marching down the main streets of town.

After the parade, I was famished! It was time for lunch. Although, there are no vegetarian or vegan restaurants in Plymouth, I was able to locate several vegan-friendly dining establishments. An exit or two away from the downtown harbor area, lies “New Tokyo” restaurant(New Tokyo Restaurant). They offer several vegan options. I opted for the Tofu Teriyaki with vegetables, drizzled with a sweet and sour sauce. My order came with a side salad, miso soup, and steamed rice. The meal was incredibly tasty and filling. Everything was cooked to perfection. The tangy sauce made the entree complete.

Next on my agenda was a visit to Plimoth Plantation. This re-created village contains era houses with their period furnishings. Costumed Pilgrims relay tales of village life in that time.

It was dinner time. For my evening meal, I dined at Alden Park restaurant (Alden Park Restaurant). It is located an exit away from the waterfront and downtown area. My dinner entree was a Vegetable Stir Fry consisting of crispy tofu, cabbage, peppers, onions in a Thai peanut sauce. It was gourmet cuisine at its finest! Now it was time to call it a night.

For my second day in town, I started off at the Healthy Appetites shop(Healthy Appetites Shop). The market primarily caters to those with food allergies or gluten intolerances. However, it is quite vegan-friendly. Since there do not seem to be any restaurants in the area that offer a vegan-friendly breakfast, I recommend that vegan travelers stop here for some breakfast snacks. I enjoyed the Navitas Naturals, gogi berry chocolate, power snack. They were so good and chewy!

After a light breakfast, I headed into the main part of town to visit the Pilgrim Hall Museum. This amazing museum houses paintings of the Pilgrims, as well as their authentic belongings! Pilgrim utensils, bowls, mugs, clothing, jewelry, and even a baby crib can be found here!

For my lunch, I paid a visit to “Bangkok Thai”(Bangkok Thai Restaurant) restaurant on the main Street(Court Street) in downtown. I selected the Bangkok Garlic entree. It consisted of tofu and veggies with brown rice. This was without a doubt, one of the best and most flavorful Thai entrees that I have ever eaten!

As I walked through downtown, I noticed a coffee shop called “Kiskadee Coffee Company”(Kiskadee Coffee Company) and stepped inside to check their menu. Sure enough, they offered tea with soymilk! I chose the green tea chai latte with steamed soymilk. This was a refreshing and yummy treat on a cold, wintery afternoon!

During my walk on the main street, I also noticed the “Common Sense Market” (Common Sense Market). Vegan travelers can purchase organic oatmeal cups there and just ask for hot water. Tables are available for sit down eating and snacking. Coconut Bliss ice cream is available for purchase. Since none of the area’s ice cream stands offer vegan ice cream, this shop is a great option for picking up a pint of Coconut Bliss.

As I walked further down the road, I came upon the Jabez Howland House. It is the only, still-standing Pilgrim House in Plymouth, built in 1667. It is closed during the winter months. However, visitors may walk by and see its exterior.

Prior to my trip, I researched and spoke with a couple of restaurants which claim to serve vegan, veggie burgers. However, the bread was not vegan. The veggie burgers were also cooked on the same grill with meat juices from other entrees. There is one additional restaurant in town that serves vegan, veggie burgers, but on a vegan bread. This option is found at the national restaurant chain “Red Robin”(Red Robin Restaurant). They are located an exit or so away on the highway in Plymouth.

Fortunately, I was able to find a restaurant by the waterfront which is very happy to customize their menu to suit vegans. Anna’s Harborside Restaurant(Anna’s Harborside Restaurant) has several vegan-friendly options. One possibly is the eggplant parmagiana without the cheese. I chose the portabella mushroom in a whole wheat wrap. It was quite tasty with a nice, vinaigrette sauce.

After my dinner, the chef was kind enough to prepare a mixed fruit plate for dessert. It included grapes and melons. The chef and staff really take care of their customers.

For my evening activity, I decided to participate in the Plymouth Christmas Lantern Tour, starting from the John Carver Inn. This space is quite close to where the town originated.

The attendees were given old-fashioned, punch-lit lanterns to carry. We strolled through the streets of old Plymouth, with our guide. He told stories of how Plymouth residents celebrated Christmas throughout the years and how the holiday celebrations came to be. We made a stop at the street where the Pilgrims first settlement came to exist.

I enjoyed my travels to historic Plymouth, Massachusetts! The Pilgrim landmarks and vegan food finds made for an amazing weekend adventure!

My Vegan Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia

This past Friday I took a weekend mini-vacation to visit Atlanta, Georgia. My purpose was twofold: 1. to attend Atlanta’s first VegFest ever and 2. to go sightseeing and also indulge in the region’s vegan food scene.

Upon arrival on Friday morning, my first stop was at the vegan “Dough Bakery”(Dough Bakery) for some breakfast! I was impressed with the variety of their baked goods offerings! Two lengthy display cases line the front of the shop and are filled with pies, cakes, muffins, and many other treats. Seasonal items are offered also, such as pumpkin sweets. They also offer soft serve vegan ice cream.

I purchased a banana whoopie pie for a later snack. I took a bite and was very pleased with its velvety filling and moist cake batter.

For my breakfast meal, I selected the cinnamon roll with glazed icing. Wow! It was incredibly good with such a melt-in-your-mouth, fabulous icing!

Within the bakery’s doors is the all-vegan, faux ‘meats’ deli called “Gutenfleischers”(Gutenfleischers). I have never before come across a vegan meats deli and vegan butcher! This was quite impressive! They also display a case filled with vegan, faux ‘meats’ such as salami, pastrami, and ham. The ‘meats’ are made with wheat gluten.

For my Friday afternoon lunch, I selected the Italian sandwich consisting of vegan ham, salami, and pepperoni with lettuce in a homemade bun. My side dish was a Korean twisted pasta salad. Everything was delish! My beverage was a sweet tea.

Dessert was a sweet potato pie. This northern girl was thrilled with this absolutely delish southern treat! I enjoyed the southern delicacies!

After lunch, sightseeing was on my agenda! The Atlanta train system is wonderful. I purchased the visitor’s 3 day pass for only $17. It brought me almost everywhere I wanted to go by train or bus! The first place on my itinerary was the Martin Luther King National Historic Site, memorial site, church, birth home, and visitor’s center museum.

His birth home offers tours. However, they were sold out for the day. I did go to the home and walk around the perimeters, as well as step onto the porch. It is quite a lovely Victorian home!

I also visited Ebenezer Church down the street where he grew up and co-pastored with his father. Tourists were greeted with a video by King’s sister and a talk by the parks system employee. We were shown the green curtain area where Martin was baptized.

After my visit in the massive Visitor Center’s display halls, and in the Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violent Change, I headed to another part of town. In Grant park, visitors can find the Atlanta Cyclorama. This poular tourist attraction was closed upon my arrival time. However, I did notice some Civil War era paintings and cannon through the window. Tourists make a stop here to see the large painting depicting the Civil War. The park is also lined with Victorian homes and lengthy trails for walking.

Dinnertime had arrived, so I took the city bus to yet another part of town to dine at Tasilli’s Raw Reality(Tasilli’s Raw Reality).

My main meal was a spicy taco with avocado over salad.

For dessert, I opted for the raw Afrikan carob cake. My meal and dessert were filling and fantastic! For my beverage, I selected a sea moss smoothie. It was also quite good and healthy!

After my meal, I awaited the city bus. Coincidently, right next to the bus stop was the ‘Wren’s Nest’, previous home of children’s book author Joel Chandler Harris. He authored the ‘Uncle Remis” classics.

I must say that I was greatly moved by how kind, helpful, friendly, and polite the citizens of Atlanta are! It was unlike anything I have ever experienced!

Saturday was Atlanta’s first ever VegFest! Crowds lined up outside the door awaiting the start of the event. The vegan restaurant “Healthful Essence” arrived with their colorful food truck to feed the hungry attendees. Once inside, multiple rows of vegan food vendors, vegan companies, and vegan goods were displayed. It was a highly successful and well-attended event! Vegan cosmetics, handbags, jewelry, shirts, dishes were on display for purchase. Vegan bakeries, ice cream vendors, and restaurants offered samples and goods for sale. I, myself had an exhibitor’s table for vegan travel.

For breakfast, I grabbed a vegan bacon and egg sandwich from Gutenfleischers. It was very tasty!

For lunch, I opted for the kale soup and wheatberry salad from ‘World Peace Cafe’(World Peace Cafe) at their exhibitor’s table. They are located in nearby Sandy Springs, Georgia. I also tried their sweet tea with a fruity aroma and taste. Everything was great!

One of the most popular vendors at the VegFest was ‘Revolution Gelato(Revolution Gelatos). They are a new vegan business seeking space in Atlanta. Their free samples of peanut butter gelato were amazing!

Another vegan sweets vendor at the VegFest was ‘Mama Bakes Safe Cakes(Mama bakes Safe Cakes) from Marietta, Georgia. I purchased the red rooibos cupcake. It was decadently scrumptious!

After the hugely popular VegFest had completed, I headed to ‘Healthful Essence’(Healthful Essence) for dinner. I chose an entree of curry un-goat, rice and peas, curried veggies, and callaloo patty. My beverage was a ginger juice. This all vegan, Caribbean restaurant was superb for my spice-loving palate! The meal was fabulous! For dessert, I chose the Georgia peach cobbler. It was awesome too!

For my last day in town, I opted for breakfast at the all vegan, ‘Dulce Bakery’(Dulce Vegan Bakery). The storefront displays two cases of vegan baked goods, including muffins, scones, and cheesecake. The wall menus display breakfast sandwich items and lunch items.

I started my day with their sweet potato muffin. This traditionally southern creation was a pleasure to devour! My main breakfast item was the vegan breakfast sandwich containing vegan sausage and vegan egg. It was just about one of the tastiest sandwiches I have ever eaten! My beverage was a banana dulce tea. This was a great way to start my day! Dulce is Atlanta’s first vegan bakery.

After my belly was satisfied, it was time to start the day’s sightseeing! First up on my Sunday tours was an area of town known for being part of the Civil War’s “Battle of Atlanta” battlefields. The now popular residential neighborhood of Inman Park consists of streets such as Elizabeth and Euclid which was where much of the battles took place in the city. The now peaceful area is lined with palatial homes. The Callan Castle, original home of Coca Cola founder “Asa Candler” is in this area.

I ate lunch at Soul Vegetarian(652 N Highland Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306) in Inman Park. This vegan, southern, soul food restaurant offers vegan meals, their own ice cream, and vegan brunch.

I dined on cornbread, country ‘steak’ with collard greens, and brown rice with gravy. Everything was flavorful and satisfying!

The remainder of my final afternoon in town was spent seeing more tourist attractions. I visited the Atlanta History Center to get a glimpse of southern history and to view artifacts from the civil war, southern folk crafts, and art. Confederate and Union army clothing and gear were on display, as well as firearms, and supply wagon. It was quite impressive and a must-see for tourists!

Though I did not have any time to stop there, Jake’s Ice Cream(Jake’s Ice Cream) offers some vegan ice cream flavors.

The final stop on my sightseeing excursion was The Margaret Mitchell house. This is where the famed author created and wrote ‘Gone With The Wind”. Visitors passed through each room in the home and viewed written newspaper and magazine articles about the author in the attached mini-museum.

After the tour, I walked over to the “Arden’s Garden” juice shop(Arden’s Garden) next door. This juice spot is all over town. I purchased a banana, strawberry, mango fruits over orange juice. It was refreshing way to end my day of sightseeing!

In the early evening, I headed back home on the plane, with happy memories in my head of the incredibly delicious vegan food scene, the history-filled sightseeing, and kindhearted peoples of Atlanta!

Vegan Road Trippin’ for Autumn Veggie and Fruit Festivals in New England

The Autumn season is the perfect time for vegans to take a road trip! Many cities and across across the land pay homage to various vegetables and fruits by offering a festival in their name! The New England states where I live offer several festivals dedicated to a particular fruit or veggie! For several weekend in September and October, I made that my quest: to seek and attend festivals representing the best in garlic, cranberries, and pumpkins.

The first weekend in September is when the Southern Vermont Garlic & Herbs Festival takes place. It is reputed to be one of the ten best garlic festivals in the world! When I arrived in Bennington, Vermont, I was greeted by row upon row of various garlic products. The fairgrounds contained white tents where each vendor showcased and sold various garlic products such as sauces, garlic bulbs, nuts, and breads.

The farmers’ tables offered sliced portions of several garlic varieties.

I purchased an apricot garlic jam. It is very tasty indeed!

One vendor offered garlic covered peanuts to sample. Those were fine for vegans.

I purchased an eight pack variety of garlics which were grown locally, yet derived from several regions of the world including Turkey, Poland, Romania, and Italy.

Music acts performed throughout the day to make this a festive event. Arts and crafts were also sold throughout the exhibitor table area.

Vegans need to beware of meals prepared at outdoor festivals. The few vegetable meals I found were cooked in the same oil as the meat or chicken. Fried dough and pretzels used butter at this particular event. It is important to ask food vendors what kind of shortening they use and if meats are cooked in the same fryer as the veggies.

I was still happy to attend the festival! I purchased some wonderfully flavorful garlic varieties, as well as some delish jam!

Another Fall activity which is perfect for vegans is a road trip to a farm stand. I visited a farm stand in northern Massachusetts where I purchased fresh, locally grown blueberries, onions, peppers, spinach, kale, eggplant, zucchini, butternut squash, string beans, tomatoes, corn, brussel sprouts, and potatoes. I stocked up to make some wonderful vegan meals.

Apple picking is another New England past time in the Fall season! This is a wonderful activity for vegans. Though apple orchard farms typically include a farm store, those stores do not usually sell vegan desserts or snacks. The pies, donuts, and breads usually contain dairy or eggs. Vegans can be satisfied by consuming the apples themselves and also by purchasing some fresh apple cider.

During the second weekend in October, the Cranberry Harvest Festival took place in Wareham, Massachusetts, near Plymouth. I was excited to visit the cranberry bogs and to sample some cranberry snacks!

Upon arrival, an exhibitor table of cranberry products greeted attendees. I purchased a box of fresh cranberries for making cranberry sauce!

My next adventure took me on a shuttle bus to cranberry bogs. When I arrived, I noticed a wooden building where vendors offered more cranberry goods. I purchased snack packs of dried cranberry treats from Ocean Spray and from another local vendor. I also purchased some locally made cranberry sauce in a jar and a bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice.

I walked around the bogs and watched the employees rake up the weeds around the cranberries then harvest them into a pipe where they made their way down a tube into a truck.

I also went on a cranberry bog tour by tractor truck with a guide who informed us about the cranberry growing and harvesting process.

When the tour completed, the shuttle bus took everyone back to the main festival grounds. Various vendors sold cranberry products throughout the area. I purchased dark chocolate covered cranberries.

The old mill building on the premises showcased an exhibit on the process of how cranberries are separated from ripe or unriped/bad ones.

The crafts tent offered cranberry products also. I purchased a scented cranberry soap. It was vegan.

The food vendors did not offer vegan meals. I found one vendor who offered fried dough with cranberry sauce but they had run out of sauce when I arrived. I was happy to nibble on the dark chocolate covered cranberries and dried cranberry snacks.

Musicians entertained the festival participants. All in all it was a great day! I enjoyed the cranberry bog tour, the arts & crafts, and the many cranberry products!

During the third weekend in October, the Keene Pumpkin Festival takes place in the city of Keene, New Hampshire. It is one of the largest pumpkin festivals in New England. When I arrived, I noticed row upon row of pumpkins everywhere! Huge, wooden display stands stacked very high with pumpkins, lined the main street. Pumpkins were placed around the circumference of the street and its corners. It was a delightful sight to behold!

I viewed pumpkins carved with humorous facial expressions, with animal imprints, and representing numerous companies and school children. Some pumpkins were painted with glitter or other materials. They truly were creative works of art in celebration of this wonderful vegetable.

The food vendors did not offer much in vegan fare. I only found one food tent which had french fries cooked in vegetable oil in its own fryer. Again, vegans need to attend festivals with the knowledge that nothing would be available for suitable meals.

I do recommend that while attending festivals, it worth your while to step into any nearby cafe or bakery to inquire if they might offer any vegan options. I noticed a candy shop/bakery “Life Is Sweet”(Life Is Sweet Candy Store) on the same main street as the pumpkin festival. I walked in and asked per chance if they have any vegan cupcakes. They mentioned that they do indeed offer one vegan cupcake which is not listed on the menu! I was thrilled! The moist chocolate cupcake with its flavorful vanilla frosting really was a delightful treat!

I was also happy to find vegan pumpkin butter at the festival itself! It tasted lovely on crackers!

Musicians performed throughout the day. Visitors could even partake in pumpkin bowling.

After dusk, the thousands of pumpkins(over 29,000 in total) were lit up with candles. At the top of the main street was a gigantic pumpkin tower, lit up in all it’s splendor!

I really enjoyed the pumpkin festival! The unique and beautiful pumpkin carvings and displays were definitely worth a visit!

My Autumn road trips were very pleasing! Vegans should take advantage of these wonderful festivals dedicated to particular fruits and veggies! They make for lovely road trips in the Fall foliage season, as well as an opportunity to see some interesting vegetable displays and try some vegan-friendly, tasty products!

Vegan Sailing…Eat, Sail, Love in the Virgin Islands!

The following is a guest post by Captain Dave, Founder of “Vegan Sailing”.

Thank you for the opportunity to tell your readers about Vegan Sailing…Eat, Sail, Love in the Virgin Islands! Vegan Sailing offers a fabulous sailing vacation in the Caribbean paradise of the Virgin Islands. Welcome aboard Bel Ami, a 53 foot world class cruising sailboat, serving artfully prepared healthy Vegan cuisine on your private crewed sailing yacht. Ideal for one couple, Vegan Sailing can accommodate up to two couples each in their own private stateroom, or one couple and up to 2 singles. Most charters run 1 week, although customized lengths are available.

I’m Captain Dave, owner of Bel Ami, and I’ve experienced a nutritional revolution in my life. I have been sailing the waters of the East Caribbean for the past 5 years from the Bahamas to Grenada. I started providing crewed yacht charters in the Virgin Islands several years ago (Bel Ami Voyages…Sail Into Romance). In July 2011 I developed chest pain and was diagnosed with coronary artery disease. I discovered that this condition can be effectively treated and eliminated with whole foods, plant based nutrition. Campbell, Esselstyn and McDougall became my heroes. I have since experienced a rejuvenation in my vitality and well being. Another consequence was the elimination of other medical conditions that I suffered from. I no longer have gout, psoriasis, heartburn/reflux, and enjoy eating all that I desire with no weight gain whatsoever!

Vegan Sailing was a natural consequence to my Vegan nutrition revolution.

At 61 years old, I have had an interesting life for which I am very grateful. Not only am I a sailboat captain, but also a physician. You can find out more about me on my professional medical website. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and have a Master’s Degree in Public Health. This past fall I completed the Whole Foods Plant Based Nutrition course at Cornell University and earned my Certificate Degree in Plant Based Nutrition. I was astounded at the amount of excellent scientific/medical literature in support of whole foods plant based nutrition, and am now committed to providing this nutrition in a sailing/cruising vacation.

What do we do on a Vegan Sailing vacation? Aside from enjoying delicious, healthy and artfully prepared Vegan cuisine, we explore exciting and beautiful underworld reefs, snorkeling such wonderful spots as the Indians and Caves of Norman Island. We hike to the top of the once volcanic Virgin Islands for fabulous vistas. Enjoy vegetable roti at Gertrudes on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Explore the beaches of Anegada, which seem to go on forever. Shop till you drop if that’s your thing. Rendezvous scuba diving is easily arranged. Read, play cards, dominos, scrabble. And of course, relax and do nothing at all! The point is to get away from it all, get into the “island time” groove, and hang out on your private crewed yacht while enjoying delicious Vegan fare.

Bel Ami, a 1998 Amel Supermaramu, was designed with sailing the world in mind. She can sleep up to 6 comfortably. She is luxuriously appointed, complete with air-conditioning, full galley, electric flush toilets, and a 53 x 37 inch movie screen for movie night (Forks over Knives, anyone?). She exceeds all US Coast Guard safety standards. As captain, I hold a 100 ton Masters USCG captain’s license. Most people book a week’s vacation, which is about the right amount of time to cruise all of the “must see” sites. However, trips can be customized to longer and shorter durations. For more information, or to book your trip today, please click on vegansailing.biz, contact Captain Dave: info@vegansailing.biz, or call 608-772-0634. Welcome Aboard!!
